Each person who walks through our doors has a story. Their story is unique. Their story comes from their life experiences, their relationships and their environment.
When they walk through our doors, we become part of their story. As the saying goes, we help them "Learn from Yesterday, Live for Today and Hope for Tomorrow."
We believe that those who come to us have been sent by God because they needed help. We understand that we are able to help them because of God's works of love and mercy, gifted to them through those who support Blessing House.
We witness God's goodness every day. Lives change because of this goodness and it is not ever easy. But the blessings we are able to pass on to our children and their parents or grandparents through the generosity of all of our supporters create every day miracles.
These stories are some of the stories of our families. They tell of their joys and their struggles, their triumphs and their growth.
Please continue to pray for them as their stories continue.
Chicken Little
Blessing House now has our own version of the “Why did the chicken cross the road?” story.
About a week ago, someone came in the house and said, “There is a chicken running around in our front yard.” The first reaction might typically be one of skepticism, but we knew right away this was true because we had another chicken visit us several summers ago.
So we looked outside, and sure enough, we had a second Chicken Little come to visit.
This little gal really liked being at Blessing House. Throughout the day, we could find her in one of the yards or running in the driveway, just hanging out. We didn’t know where she came from but we assumed it had escaped from a neighbor close by. So of course, all week we heard, “So why DID the chicken cross the road . . . because she wanted to stay at BLESSING HOUSE!”
Well, this was a pretty smart chicken.
She wandered the property during the day, then nested in a bush next to the house at night. We waited for someone to come looking for her, but didn’t hear a word.
Then Sr. Mary returned from a few days off and took over.
First, she wanted to make sure she had enough to eat. After a bit of research, she determined that chickens like cucumbers. Cucumbers? We had plenty of those in the garden, so of course she cut some up and set them out for our chick. And, of course, she ate them.
But then being Sr. Mary she said, “We need to find out where she came from so she can go back home.” So, she drove to a house on a side street close by where she thought she had heard a rooster crowing before. She parked in the driveway and knocked on the door and a woman answered who was more than a little surprised when Sr. Mary told her, “I think we have one of your chickens!”
The lady indicated that one indeed had gone missing, but they had no idea where to even look for her. But she was glad Sr. Mary contacted them and assured her they would come retrieve their little lost one that evening.
Chicken Little did make it back home, thanks to the determination of one nun who can’t bear to see anyone or anything lost or abandoned. I guess that’s why Blessing House has now cared for almost 1,400 children, because of the heart and determination on which it was founded.
“Why did the chicken cross the road?”
We know the answer to that.
Those who need us always seem to find us.
